Geocache Description:

This Lost Huntington multi-cache will take you to three locations in the Central City area and the West End of Huntington.

The third and final stage is a daylight only cache.  Two locations for parking are listed for the final stage

I created this cache as a stop on the 2015 Cabell County GeoTrail: LOST HUNTINGTON, The trail was concluded years ago, but the caches with their local history are still of interest.

HISTORY

The first stage (posted coordinates) takes you to where the former Fesenmeier (pronounced Fāze-n-my-er) Brewery was located.  Beginning in 1899 when the family purchased a defunct brewery at this location, the brewery, named West Virginia Brewing Company, survived a fire in 1905 and a flood in 1913, but could not survive West Virginia’s enactment of Prohibition in 1914.  The business was turned into a meat packing plant and later an ice and ice cream business.  With the end of Prohibition in 1934, the brewery was reopened under the name of Fesenmeier Brewing Company and served the regional area until 1968.  The brewery was sold and reopened as the Little Switzerland Brewing Company until it declared bankruptcy in 1971.

At the second stage stood the Abbott Theater that was built in 1938 at a cost of $1,700.00. As the theaters in downtown Huntington showed the new releases, The Abbott showed re-releases and double features at a price that was less than the downtown theaters. The Abbott showed its last movie in 1951. The theater was leased to community theater groups for the forty years until repairs forced the community theater to close. After a fire, the city razed the building in 1994.

The final is located near the site of the former Lock and Dam No. 28. In 1910, Congress authorized the construction of 50 locks and dams along the Ohio River to make it deep enough in places for year-round navigation. As the barges and boats grew in size, the need for larger locks and dams became inevitable and after the construction of the massive Greenup Locks and Dam in 1962, the four smaller locks and dams upstream, including this one, were no longer needed and were demolished.

THE CACHE

At the first stage (posted coordinates) you are looking for the taller of two telephone poles beside each other.  On the street side, you will see two identification tags.  Ignoring the letters, the numbers on the yellow tag are ABCDEF and the numbers on the orange tag are GHIJK.

Stage 2 is located at:  N 38° 24.DEG  W 082° 28.BAA   At this stage, face west.  To your left, you are looking for the number of windows on the north side of this building and the number of letters in the word on the top left corner of this wall.  These will be L and M respectively.

The final stage is located at: N 38° 24.FMH  W 082 29.LCL   Be sure to follow the parking coordinates and limitations.
