Geocache Description:

This cache gets you close to an access to one of the sandstone barren/glade. Cache is placed outside of the ecological area in compliance of the SNF geocaching policy.

After finding the cache head north along the trail until you see an open sandstone area to the west. There are not official trail on the barren, you will have to navigate from one open are to another. Barrens offer unique plant life due to the thin sandy acidic soil, gnarly blackjack oak and cedars cling to the sandstone, with patches of grasses and other plants. This is also a great area to see lizards, birds and insects. Keep an eye out of for the lichen grass hoppers (they look just like the lichen, and other insects that cover themselves with lichen as camouflage. Work your way across the Barren to get near the valley with the stone foundation to an old spring house N37 30.488 W88 42.921.
