As primeiras fortiticacoes foram mandadas construir por D.Afonso III por volta de 1259. O seu filho D.Dinis procedeu ao reforco da defesa a partir de 1290. Entre 1641 e 1646 nvo reforço da fortificação de Portalegre no contexto das Guerras da Restauração, com adaptações sumárias.
