The Invercargill Prison (on Victoria Ave) opened in 1910 and operated as a Borstal facility till 1981 houseing about 165 prisoners. After 1981 it changed to being a medium security Prison. Back in the Borstal phase the Prison operated a training farm across the Waihopai River near the airport. To get to the farm they had thier own trestle (woops not a trestle bridge as apparently only railways have trestles) bridge.
For many years this bridge was part of the Invercargill public roads. Many of the older locals would have crossed it by car in car rally events or just walked or biked it. After the Borstal Farm closed and the road from this bridge to Airport Ave removed the bridge fell to disrepair and closed to private cars (not that you had anywhere to go to) but was still usable for walking and biking. Several years ago the biking section of the world famous Wai-Tri event used the bridge. It is now fenced off and signs saying no entry. So I do not know how long the bridge will remain... just enjoy the view of it.
