Please see #1 for main description of the walk.
The Speckled Wood occurs in woodland, gardens and hedgerows and often perch in sunny spots, spiralling into the air to chase each other.
The male usually perches in a small pool of sunlight, from where it rises rapidly to intercept any intruder. The caterpillars are bright green with faint, darker green and yellow stripes. They pupate after about 10 days, with the chrysalises suspended beneath grass blades. Unlike any other British butterfly, speckled woods are able to hibernate as either a caterpillar or chrysalis.
