Surely this should be a modern wonder?
A quite incredible piece of modern engineering that you could easily never notice and never know was here.
This marvel was built in the 1950's when there was a steel shortage. It was completed April 1954, is 5.5 miles long, 2/3 of it is wood stave. It is made of tongue and groove planks with steel bands. Staves were precut and assembled on site. Steel was only used where the water pressure was too high or they couldn't get the foundations close enough together to support the timber.
