Mr. ZIP és a ZIP nap
Városi legenda valószínuleg, hogy egy kisgyerek nyári táborból küldött levelén ez a címzés állt: "Nagyanyámnak, falura" És a levél megérkezett.
Ami akár még igaz is lehet, régebben a postás személyesen ismerte a körzetének a lakóit és tudhatta, kinek az unokája a feladó.
De ha a tábor Alsõörsön volt, a nagymama pedig mondjuk Ambrózfalván lakott, a kézbesítés sikere már nagyban múlott az elso döntésen: hova küldjék tovább a levelet? Minél közelebb kerül a címzett lakóhelyéhez, annál nagyobb az esélye, hogy a helyi postás kézbesíteni tudja, még hiányos címzéssel is.
A 70-es évektol ez nem volt probléma. Az irányítószámok magyarországi bevezetését országos kampány övezte, rendszeresen megjelent az öreg postás bácsi, hollóval a vállán és emlékeztetett: "Ráírta az irányítószámot? Anélkül a tosiba nem tudja szétválogatni a levelet." Így történhetett, hogy ha irányítószám is szerepelt a borítékon, a "nagymamának, falura" küldött levél célba érhetett.
Az irányítószám persze rengeteg mindenre jó - bulizásra is. A ZIP Day-t sok amerikai városban ünneplik.
Még van addig két év, de Mr. Zip, az amerikai irányítószámok megalkotójának 100. születésnapja éppen egybeesik Brownsville, Pennsylvania zip-napjával.
Vannak épületek, amelyek külön irányítószámot kapnak. A magyarországi irányítószámok bevezetésének 45. születésnapjának zip-napja (10118) az Empire State Building irányítószáma.

Probably an urban legend that the letter sent from a summer camp to this address: "to my grandmother, village" and the letter arrived.
Which may be even true as in those times the postman personally knew the inhabitants of the area where he worked thus would know the grandson of the addressee.
However if the camp was at ALSÓÖRS but the grandmother lived at Ambrózfalva then the first decision about where to route the mail was crucial. The closer it was routed to the place of the grandmother the greater the chance that the local postman find her even with the incomplete address.
From the 70's it was not an issue. The introduction of the postcodes in Hungary was accompanied with a national campaign. You can remember the old postman with a raven in his shoulder reminding you: "Do not forget to write the postcode otherwise tosiba can not read it." So if postcode was included in the envelope then "tosiba could read it" and the "to grandma, village" letter eventually reached her.
Postcodes of course have other benefits - they can be a good reason to have a party. The ZIP Day is celebrated in many US cities. It is still two years away but Mr. Zip's, the creator of American zip codes 100th birthday coincides the zip-day of Brownsville, Pennsylvania.
There are buildings that have separate postcodes. The ZIP day of the 45th birthday of the introduction of the postcodes in Hungary (1973. január 1.) is the ZIP code (10118) of the Empire State Building.
