The cache is located on the wharf that was the landing point for the ferry that plied the Ottawa River from Sand Point to Norway Bay from the early 1900s to 1963. The wharf is a favourite fishing spot for many so feel free to cast a line and try your luck!
In the early 1800s, newly arrived settlers waited here to be transported across the Ottawa River by Pointer boat to Norway Bay, Quebec. Around 1861, Sand Point became the terminus of the Canada Central Railway constructed primarily to aid the lumber trade. At the time Sand Point was home to a bustling hotel, general store and even had its own post office. In the early 1900s, many families built summer homes in Norway Bay Quebec and the easiest way to reach them was to travel by rail to Sand Point and be ferried across the river. The original ferryboat was horse driven. It was replaced in 1909 by a motorized ferry, the Norway Belle that plied the waters until 1923 when it was replaced by a more powerful diesel powered boat, the Norvic. It provided faithful service for the next 40 years until ferry service ceased in 1963. The Norvic was named for its home wharf, Norway Bay and its builder Canadian Vickers of Montreal. This wharf and its lighthouse remain as silent sentinels of bygone travel on the Ottawa River.
