The End of an Era Traditional Cache

This cache will bring you close to an Ontario Heritage site. From GZ you will see what remains of the Gillies Brothers Limited Braeside Sawmill, which the Gillies family owned and operated here on the Ottawa from 1873-1963. There is evidence of poison ivy around GZ so please take appropriate precautions!

The mill processed white pine lumber and employed many local residents. The sawmill was sold to Consolidated Bathhurst in 1963, closed by them in 1992, and demolished in 2007 signifying the end of the white pine industry in this area. If you continue along the River Road to Breaside you will pass by the former Gillies office, a brown brick building on the side of the hill, overlooking the Ottawa River and the former mill yard. This building has been renovated into apartments.
