Geocache Description:

This Earthcache highlights an interesting boulder by the side of Sack Lane, on the Arley estate.

Geologists classify rocks into three main types: igneous, sedementary and metamorphic. Igneous rocks were formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava, which may have resulted from volcanic activity. Sedimentary rocks were formed from deposits of material, such as particles of sand, gravel or mud, which were compressed together. Metamorphic rocks were created when existing rocks were subjected to great temperatures and pressures, thus causing profound physical and/or chemical changes.

To log this cache, please email me the answers to the following questions.

1. Which of the three types of rock do you think the boulder is?
2. Describe the surface of the boulder. Is it smooth or does it have imperfections?
3. Explain how you think the boulder was formed, and what you think gave it the characteristics that you described.
4. Estimate the size of the above-ground volume of the rock in cubic metres.
5. An Ordnance Survey benchmark is cut into the front of the boulder.  What height above sea level does this benchmark denote?  (You may need to do some internet research for this.)
6. Optionally, it would be good to see photos of you and/or your GPS by the boulder.
