Geocache Description:

Church of St Peter and St Paul

This lovely old church seems to be in the middle of nowhere. The village of Oulton is quite spread out over 3 different main areas, none very near to the church.

It is mainly 12th century, with the tower and porch added in the 13th/14th century.

It has had numerous repairs over the years and has various filled in archways. A lovely medieval priests door survives. It has a square hood enclosing carved leaves and tudor roses. In medieval times the priest was responsible for the upkeep of the chancel and had his own door. The parish and congregation were responsible for the rest of the church.

Inside the victorian pews have been replaced with chairs. There is a plain octagonal font. A wall painting from the middle ages survives of a fish, some think it relates to St Christopher. It is very light inside and unusually there is no stained glass.

There is a Royal Air Force memorial from world war two. Oulton had an airfield built in 1939-40 and was a bomber command for the RAF.

There is also a fine display of stitched kneelers.

The cache is not within the church grounds. It is a similar size to a film canister and is green. Please replace as found.

There is a footpath going through the side cemetery. You will need to follow this through to the gate.

There is parking at the church.
