Waalschelle

Einst dienten diese Wege nur dem „Waaler“, der für die aufwändige Kontrolle und Instandhaltung des Waales zu sorgen hatte und auch die genau eingeteilten Bewässerungszeiten der Felder überwachen musste. Das Funktionieren des Waales konnte er mittels einer Waalschelle kontrollieren. Dabei trieb ein kleines Wasserrad, an welchem ein Bolzen befestigt war, einen Hammer, der regelmäßig auf die Kuhschelle oder ein Wasserblech schlug. Der gleichmäßige Klang der Waalschelle signalisierte dem Waaler, dass das „Wasserwossr“ regelmäßig floss.

Il “Waaler“ deve fino ad oggi far sì che l’acqua scorra priva di ostacoli e che l’ordine di irrigazione venga osservato. Le cosiddette “Waalschellen“ (ruote ad acqua montate sulle canalette di legno) o i “Waalhammer” (martelletti che picchiavano su campanacci) facilitano il suo lavoro. Grazie ai colpi cadenzati di questa sorta di “metronomi del regolare deflusso delle acque“ il sorvegliante dei canali d’irrigazione può sentire, anche a distanza, se l’acqua scorre regolarmente.

he Waaler cleaned the channels and ensured that water reached the different fields for the right amount of time. They opened and closed the wooden sluice gate shutters to control the flow of the water as necessary and looked after the small water-wheels. These wheels each have a hammer which clink as the water passes so that the Waaler know that everything is all right as long as he hears the hammer striking as it should.
