Geocache Description:

The EASTERN RAT SNAKE is often referred as a black snake. This is the largest snake species in Pennsylvania and can grow to over eight feet long. It is non poisonous and has a mild temperment. The black snake has been called the "farmer's friend" because it helps keep the rodent population under control.

If you are afraid of snakes, this cache may not be for you. It is about one very friendly black snake I call Jake. We became great friends last Summer. Here is my story.

Last Summer, I was walking along a grassy field in the park when I noticed a very large snake sunning himself on a log and he noticed me at the same time. He sensed the air and began to slowly move towards me. My first instinct was to run but at the same time I was fascinated by this creature. To make a long story short, I decided to stand my ground and that is how I got to meet Jake the snake. Jake was actually lonely and was looking for human companionship. My guess is that Jake was a pet that got too big and was set free in the park. And as I mentioned, Jake is very friendly. He wants to crawl up on you and seems to enjoy being handled. Since Jake wants company, I thought a cache here would bring some nice geocaching folks to visit him.

Black snakes have a limited home range. Since Jake seeks out people, I am sure you will encounter him. It actually seemed like he wanted to crawl up on me and give me a little lick on the face. I was not brave enough to do that. Are you?

In your log, let us know how you got along with Jake. Please be gentle with him.

Hope you enjoy Jake the Snake.

Caution: During wet periods, the grass leading to the cache is supersaturated and feels like walking on a sponge full of water.
