The Tihany Peninsula is a large peninsula of Lake Balaton, which extends from its northern shore into the lake near Aszófő. It is one of the most diverse landscapes in Hungary; the first landscape protection area was established here. Administratively, the entire peninsula belongs to Tihany.
Topography
The peninsula is connected to the mainland by a predominantly marshy isthmus, which rises only 6 meters above the level of the lake. The peninsula itself is 5 km long and its greatest width is 3.5 km. Its shores are formed by a steep range of hills, which surround the entire peninsula and at its highest peaks (Csúcshegy 235 m, Óvár 214 m, Hármashegy 212 m) rise 120-130 meters above the level of Lake Balaton.
These mountains surround a valley basin, which is divided into two depressions by a transverse rise; one is the Inner Lake (131 m) right next to Tihany, the other is the marshy Outer Lake (116 m).
The rock of the peninsula is sandstone, the tephra that came to the surface during the basalt eruption during tuff-volcanic activity solidified and cemented the basic, volcanic debris rock is basalt tuff (in Tihany on the north side of the Óvar, this soft and sculptable rock is clearly visible at the Barátlakások) and siliceous limestone.

A Tihanyi-félsziget a Balaton nagy félszigete, mely annak északi partjáról Aszófő táján nyúlik be a tóba. Magyarország egyik legváltozatosabb tája; itt hozták létre az első tájvédelmi körzetet. Közigazgatásilag a teljes félsziget Tihanyhoz tartozik.
Domborzata
A félsziget átlagosan 2 km széles, és túlnyomóan mocsaras földnyelv kapcsolja a szárazföldhöz, mely földnyelv csak 6 méterrel emelkedik a tó szintje fölé. Maga a félsziget 5 km hosszú és legnagyobb szélessége 3,5 km. Partjait meredek dombsor alkotja, mely az egész félszigetet övezi és legmagasabb csúcsaiban (Csúcshegy 235 m, Óvár 214 m, Hármashegy 212 m) 120-130 méternyire emelkedik a Balaton szintje fölé.
Ezek a hegyek egy völgykatlant vesznek körbe, amelyet egy harántos emelkedés két mélyedésre oszt; egyik a Belső-tó (131 m) közvetlenül Tihany mellett, a másik a mocsaras Külső-tó (116 m).
A félsziget kőzete homokkő, tufa-vulkán tevékenység során bazalt kiömlésekor a felszínre került tefra megszilárdult és cementálódott bázisos, vulkáni törmelékes kőzete a bazalttufa (Tihanyban az Óvar északi oldalán a Barátlakásoknál jól látható ez a puha és faragható kőzet) és kovás mészkő.
