Geocache Description:

A simple sort of cache on the Angles Way close to the ruins of Mettingham Castle.

The ruins of Mettingham Castle can be seen from the road a short way to the west of here at the parking waypoint. These are private but make for interesting viewing from the road.

The castle was developed from an earlier moated and fortified manor house in 1342. It ended up in the hands of secular canons who taught here until the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th Century. The buildings were largely demolished in the 18th Century, although the gatehouse ruins which remain are certainly impressive enough.

The Angles Way runs along the Norfolk-Suffolk border from Great Yarmouth to Thetford. It’s well marked and the section here is a lovely little wooded path off the road. Limited parking is available at the Castle if you want to do a short circular walk (partly on quiet enough lanes) or there are places to pull in off the side of the road, including close to location of this geocache.

The lanes in this area are suitable for cycling and horse riding and the section of the Angles Way here has recently been designated a bridleway. Public transport options are, however, very limited.

The cache is a decent sized plastic lock and lock container with some standard camouflage involved. It's on the smaller side of regular. There is no need to leave the area enclosed by the path.
