Geocache Description:

Travelling by boat all those years ago the south west coast was usually the first view of land for sailors and mariners, and probably even pirates. It's steep cliffs, ferocious ocean, have shaped this landscape. Rugged, but beautiful. Tranquil at times, unsafe and dangerous at others, the seas around here has been cause for many a wreck.

In April 1874 lights were switched on at the house - and this then became the first lighthouse in the British Isles to be built of concrete. 102 years later in 1976 the lighthouse became fully automated.

However, prior to this lighthouse, there was painted along the coast, a rock white. Still to this day, this rock, once in a decade is painted to aid the navigation of vessils.

At low water, and on a spring tide, you can walk to this rock, and indeed is renowned as an excellent place for anglers.

You may be lucky to witness a grey seal who has made the ocean here their home.
