Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks Wherigo
This region, with the bayous dumping into the Gulf of Mexico, was first settled by farmers and fishermen in the late 1870’s. Some of the new settlers saw tarpon jumping out of the water and so named it Tarpon Springs. John Cheyney launched his first fishing boat in the 1890’s. It was soon discovered that the waters were rich with highly sought after sponges. The area is now a focal point of Greek culture. Tarpon Springs has the highest percentage of Greek Americans of any city in the US.
This wherigo will take you on a tour of Dodecanese Blvd, a working waterfront street. Here you will see sponge boats with their load of sponges drying out to be ready for sale.
The Wherigo should take less than an hour to complete. There are several paid parking locations along Dodecanese Blvd. and free parking behind the Sponge Docks Exchange and don’t forget your camera.
