Aproximadamente, a la medianoche del 2 de mayo de 2000 la disponibilidad selectiva (selected availability) de la señal de satélites del sistema de posicionamiento global (Global Positioning System) fue descontinuada. Por lo tanto, todo aquel dueño de un recibidor de este sistema podía conocer su localización precisa en el planeta Tierra. ¿Qué hacer con este nuevo poder? Que tal si un juego! Un día después de este acontecimiento, el 3 de mayo, un entusiasta tecnológico llamado Dave Ulmer tuvo la idea de probar la precisión del sistema colocando un blanco de navegación dentro de un bosque. Le llamo a esto "The Great American GPS Stash Hunt" y colocó las coordenadas en un grupo de internet de entusiastas de GPS. La idea detrás del "GPS Stash Hunt": Esconde un artículo y marca las coordenadas con una unidad de GPS. El buscador tenía que encontrar el contenedor con el uso de su recibidor. Las reglas para el que lo encontrara: "Lleva algo, deja algo". El contenedor original era una paila negra en el bosque cerca de Beaver Creek, Oregon (cerca de Portland). Junto a un libro de visitas y un lápiz, también se encontraban en la paila varios artículos tales como videos, libros, programas de computadora, una honda y hasta una lata de habichuelas. Compartió el waypoint de este escondite con la comunidad cibernética en sci.geo.satellite-nav: N 45° 17.460 W 122° 24.800
El nombre de Geocaching fue sugerido por Matt Stum el 30 de mayo de 2000, bajo el pretexto de que la palabra "stash" podía tener unas connotaciones negativas. La página más utilizada hoy día, geocaching.com, nació el 2 de septiembre de 2000. Desde entonces se han publicado más de un millón de caches alrededor del mundo. Con miles de usuarios, no es de sorpresa que el deporte llegara a Puerto Rico poco tiempo después de su creación.

Celebración
Acompáñanos a celebrar en La Reserva Natural de Humacao, Efraín Archilla, la cual está ubicada en la carretera #3 que conecta a Humacao con Naguabo. El evento dará inicio a las 10:00am, en las coordenadas publicadas y culminará a las 12:30 pm. Habrá actividades como caminatas por la reserva y busqueda de caches existentes del area y mas.
