HISTORY
Before the days of VCR's, DVD's, movie rental kiosks, and streaming movies, people flocked to drive-in movie theaters on Friday and Saturday evenings. Families, young adults, and teenagers piled into their trucks and cars (and occassionally into their trunks if they were trying to sneak in for free!) and spent their evenings watching movies, hanging out with their friends, and trying to sneak a kiss from their sweethearts. If movie-goers in the back seat of the car really wanted to see the movie, they would often bring a blanket or lawn chairs and sit outside rather than trying to see around the front seat headrests. The movie sound was transmitted through big, bulky speakers on short posts that had just enough wire so that you could set it on the ground or hang it in your car window. In Cabell County, West Virginia, the East Drive-In at 5160 U.S. 60 East was where this favorite weekend pasttime took place.
By the 1980's, families were choosing to watch movies in the convenience and comfort of their home. It was truly the end of an era for the drive-in movie theaters. In 1993, the East Drive-In property was bought by a retail giant, and the once popular weekend gathering place went the way of the dodo bird. Today, this location is home to a medical mall.
FINDING THE CACHE
This is a two-stage multicache. Stage 1 of the geocache is at the listed coordinates. Here you will find a relic from the drive-in movie days. The relic will provide you with the information you need to determine the coordinates for Stage 2. It is recommended that you drive from Stage 1 to Stage 2. The container at Stage 2 is a plastic ammo can with plenty of room for swag or trackables.
Special thanks to ThorScouts for hiding this cache.
