Melbourne is home to some of the best street art in the world. However before the stencil art revolution took off, 'pieces' were the dominant medium of street art. Written in large letters, a graffiti writer would paint his name in his own distinct style, colours and spelling. These are defined as a 'piece'. Most pieces I looked at over the 90's in Melbourne I could read, or if I couldn't, would recognize the style and be able to tell who the writer was. However to the general public I think it was perhaps just a colourful mess, vandalism or something that looked cool but didn't make any sense. Having a distinct 'name' would distinguish a writer in terms of style and reputation, a signature where the goal is to stand out. These would take place in many forms. Legally on shop walls, or illegally, as close to the train line as possible which acts as a 'gallery' to passengers, and when possible, the most risky and illegal, on the train itself, called a 'panel'. This purpose of this puzzle is not to condone graffiti, however to take a closer look at an artform that has dominated Melbourne above anything else. Secondly, to also take people out of their comfort zone in looking into something that is quiet different from other street objects such as sculptures, architecture and monuments.
This puzzle will test your ability to read graffiti pieces from Melbourne using the images below. I have chosen images that I can read the letters clearly when I look at, however will be a test for the non observer. Things to keep in mind when looking at each image:
- A general rule is to keep letters different in shape, but symmetrical in size.
-Logic applies, you need to be able to pronounce. If MDFSZ doesn't sound right, it isn't.
-Correct spelling is not always a given.
Please leave me a note in your log your opinions on the graffiti pieces in this puzzle. I expect and value diverse opinions!
