The cache is located near a lovely viewpoint across to the two adjacent islands of Ulva and Gometra. There used to be a picnic table here, but unfortunately it has rotted away. In 2010, CountryMatters placed 10 caches on the island of Ulva, to commemorate 10 years of geocaching; there are still no caches on Gometra, given its considerable walking distance from the Ulva ferry - but a few caches may be placed on this lovely island one day...
Ulva is a community owned island and the population is now growing again. There are no tarmac roads on Ulva, so the main form of transport is quad bikes used by all inhabitants, young and old.
The island of Gometra is agricultural, formerly growing grain for the monastery on Iona. Once home to over a hundred souls, the island is now down to a tight-knit community of just a handful of people, a thousand black-faced sheep, Highland cattle, pigs, horses, a flock of feral goats, and red deer. Historical sites on the island include an old burial ground, the remains of two duns and old settlements. It has no school, doctor, or ferry, and just a weekly postal service.
