Geocache Description:

This is a lovely, historic cemetery on Baseline Road. Michigan law dictates ABSOLUTELY NO NIGHT CACHING. Please be respectful of your surroundings


The "SQ" in the geocache name denotes a Geocaching Spirit Quest. This designation is to distinguish geocaches that are placed in cemeteries or memorial gardens and have a more spiritual meaning than most geocaches that are out in the rest of the world. Please be respectful of the surroundings. Be a good geocaching role model: leave no trace and CITO when possible..

The village of Clarenceville, MI began with the building of a tavern and general store by Stephen Jennings in 1836. Located in the extreme southeast corner of the township of Farmington bordering Livonia, it was named for Thomas Clarency (once owner of present-day Botsford Inn).


Clarenceville was the last stagecoach stop on the Lansing to Detroit plank road.

“Population 200. It was situated in a rolling farming country, devoted in large part to grazing.
Butter, cheese, etc., were the chiief products marketed. It had daily mail.”

The settlement began to fade with the closing of the stage lines and was eventually assimilated by the cities of Farmington and Livonia. Today the only remains of the name “Clarenceville” is a school district and cemetery.

Clarenceville Cemetery, organized in 1841, is located on Base Line Road. It was managed by the Union Burial Society, which met once a year in April. The cemetery contains the burial sites of solders from four conflicts, including the Revolutionary War.
