Abercwmboi used to be the home of the famous phurnacite plant which produced pre-burnt coal to be shipped away. Once severely polluted as a result of the production process, the village has a reputation among those who are old enough to remember the coal industry. The phurnacite was demolished but the land was never redeveloped.
