| "Napoleon has humbugged me, by God; he has gained twenty-four hours' march on me", the Duke of Wellington at the Duchess of Richmond's Ball. |
The Duchess of Richmond had arranged a ball to be held in Brussels on 15 June 1815, and despite the French massing on the border, it still went ahead. Invitees included the majority of the Duke of Wellington's senior officers, and he was able to use the event as an informal staff briefing.

During the evening, the news arrived that the French were crossing the border. Many soldiers went straight from the ball to the battlefield at Quatre Bras, and some were still wearing their ballroom attire three days later at the Battle of Waterloo.

Additional Notes
Terrain: I first visited the area in April, and the ground was still quite muddy in places, however just a few weeks later, and the ground was rock hard with the nettles above waist height. I do not recommend shorts for a couple of the caches at this time of year!
