With 2015 being the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, I have created a small series of puzzles to remember this pivotal event. All are located within a short walk once solved. Have fun…

"My heart is broken by the terrible loss I have sustained in my old friends and companions and my poor soldiers. Believe me, nothing except a battle lost can be half so melancholy as a battle won", the Duke of Wellington in a dispatch, 1815

"My Mary, let the recollection console you that the happiest days of my life have… from your love and affection, and that I die loving only you, and with a fervent hope that our souls may be reunited hereafter and part no more.
What dear children, my Mary I leave you. My Marianna, gentlest girl, may God bless you. My Anne, my John, may Heaven protect you. My children may you all be happy and may the reflection that your father never in his life swerved from the truth and always acted from the dictates of his conscience, preserve you, virtuous and happy, for without virtue there can be no happiness.
My darling Mary I must tell you again how tranquilly I shall die, should it be my fate to fall, we cannot, my own love, die together - one or other must witness the loss of what we love most. Let my children console you, my love. My Mary.

Extracts of a letter written by Major Arthur Rowley Heyland to his wife on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo. Major Heyland led the 40th Regiment to its position on the battlefield after a short march. The Regiment remained as support until 2 pm at the farm of Mont St. Jean. It was then advanced towards the farm of La Haye Saint. At about 7 pm the Duke of Wellington himself rode up to the Regiment and gave the command to advance. Here Heyland was killed by a ball in the neck. His sword had previously been shattered, his horse wounded and for the greater part of the day he had been riding bareheaded, his cap having probably also been shot away. He was 34.

Memorial at St. Catherine's Church, Cossall, Nottinghamshire - "This monument erected to the memory of John Shaw and Richard Waplington of the Life Guards and Thomas Wheatley of the Light Dragoon Guards. Who left their native home in defense of their country, the two former gloriously fell at Waterloo, the latter returned and is buried in this church yard".

It seems quite right that we should remember soldiers who fought for our freedom.

Additional Notes
Terrain: I first visited the area in April, and the ground was still quite muddy in places, however just a few weeks later, and the ground was rock hard with the nettles above waist height. I do not recommend shorts for a couple of the caches at this time of year!
