We met Fran (Peter Coonan) for the first time hanging out in his mountain lair with perennial sidekick Deano, (Ian Lloyd Anderson) smoking and drinking. Fran played a mid-level cannabis and cigarette smuggler / wannabe drug dealer, loan shark and dog-fighting enthusiast. He lived in a grotty isolated caravan and liked sitting out staring at the city lights. Fran kept a finger in many pies, collected odd souvenirs and stored them in his fridge.

****SPOILER ALERT LOVE/HATE PLOT*****
If you haven't watched Love/Hate, then we would suggest you look away now...
Previously on Love/Hate:
Fran could be humorous and easy going when things are going right for him. However if things went wrong you could never predict what he would do next. He always seemed to be at loggerheads with someone. He fell out with John-Boy over a non payment, so John-Boy took out a hit on him. Once John-Boy was out of the way Nidge and Fran became unlikely allies.
We knew Fran was being kept in the dark by Nidge. Initially Fran wasn't aware that Nidge had an affair with his missus. Nor was he aware that Nidge has been the one who fired the pipe bomb into his home, even though he knew Linda was inside. The results were tragic for Linda. We knew that there would be fireworks when the truth came out.
Patrick Ward made the pipe bomb for Nidge that did all the damage. Ironically earlier Fran asked Nidge not to kill Patrick Ward describing him as being:
"The most peaceful pipe bombed I know"
He certainly didn’t have his finger on the pulse on that one.

Fran Season 3
In Season 4 Fran was the first person Nidge called when Git was murdered. He took control of disposing of Git's body. It was to the nearby yard that Git's body was brought.

Nidge was unaware that Fran had kept a souvenir of Gits finger bone. Fran considered this bone to be a good luck charm and he liked to take it out and give it an auld rub every now and then.
Later Fran's sidekick Deano was beaten to a pulp and forced to change his allegiance to Nidge's gang when Fran was locked up. Siobhan (Charlie Murphy) gives him a scary reminder of just how much trouble he had dropped Fran in when she repeats:
“I’ve got a bone to pick with you”

Siobhan knew the was a story behind the bone. She wanted to know where it came from and she wanted vengeance for Tommy's injuries. She questioned Deano to get more information. :

Siobhan flirts with Deano
Fran was not happy when Tommy let it slip to the Gardaí that he had been involved in the Tiger kidnapping. He lured Tommy up to his yard by promising him a puppy. A terrified Siobhan saw him get in the van with Fran and begged Nidge to intervene. One of Fran's most menacing performances took place here until Nidge made a lifesaving call.

Deano became a victim of the Nidge/Fran fall out in Season 5. Siobhan went to get Gits bone from Fran's yard and use it to frame Nidge. Meanwhile Fran was on the run. When he returned unexpectedly a terrified Siobhan hid under Fran’s caravan.

She witnessed Fran battering his pal Deano to death before her eyes because he knew he had changed allegiance to Nidge.
Fran was also regularly up in arms against his nemesis Noley Hughes. Noley knocked out some of his teeth in a bathroom brawl. We saw how Fran took the law into his own hands when he dug up Noley’s dead mother.
In Season 4 Nidge and Fran had organised a big shipment of lidocaine into the country, using Andrew the dentist as cover to import the drugs. Fran later killed the dentist after discovering he’d ratted them out by smothering him with a plastic bag… but not before getting his teeth fixed for free.
During the course of Season five Fran posed a threat to Nidge’s leadership of the gang – with repeated resentful outbursts, as well as moves to set up his own criminal sidelines from his grim little base in the hills. Things eventually turned very sour once Fran knew what Nidge had done to Linda.
Nidge’s first hit on an incarcerated Fran failed and ended up with someone losing an eye. Nidge decided to see if he could get someone else to take care of Fran. When Nidge revealed to Noley Hughes what Fran had done at the graveside he took matters into his own hands resulting in a horrific assault for Fran in the final episodes.
On the other hand on a lighter note many of the show’s funniest and most memorable lines came from his mouth, from:
“Coola-Boola”
To giving back handed compliments (?) and his views on ehh… romance??:
“Are you a ladybird… or a durtburrd?”
You have to hand it to Fran as some of his moves which were crazily funny at times. When questioned by the Gardai he answered by doing a "chicken" style dance singing:
“Ging gang gooley gooley wash wash ging gang go ging gang go….!”

Fran sings "Ging gang gooley..."
When looking for the reasons behind a drugs bust he became fairly philosophical:
““The Universe, Nidge, The Universe”
It was no wonder then that Detective Ciaran preferred to be the one to catch Fran red handed saying;
“You take Nidge, I’ll take Fran. I like Fran, he’s a mad b@#!%rd”.
