Haywood Isaac Burton, Civil War Soldier
A young man from Tuscaloosa, just 21 years old, was killed in action at Chickamauga on September 20, 1863; the second day of the battle.
Private Haywood had enlisted in Company H of the 5th Alabama Infantry; this company was known as “The Warrior Guards”. In late 1861 this company was reorganized into an artillery unit. Private Burton was serving with this artillery unit when he was killed on the battlefield at Chickamauga.
He was buried at Chickamauga, here at Greenwood Cemetery his family erected this monument. The monument itself is very weathered, most now illegible.
