Geocache Description:

Another in the King Robert The Bruce series and linked to cache GC4Y80A in the city centre & GC4Z0Y1. on Back Hilton Road.

King Robert's great charter of 1319, allowed the citizens of Aberdeen to own the Burgh, the forests and all the revenue from the land within the borders. The revenue from the Freedom Lands is known as "The Common Good Fund".

The inner CR (City Royal) March Stones mark the boundary of a series of crofts and croft lands that ringed the Medieval Royal Burgh of Aberdeen

THIS CACHE IS LOCATED CLOSE TO SEVERAL CR STONES or CR MARKS WHICH ARE SHOWN AS WAYPOINTS.

On these lands much of the city’s corn, bere (or barley) and wheat was grown. These lands have probably pertained to the Royal Burgh since its inception.

CUSTOMS STATIONS

Till Whitsunday, 1880, small dues called Petty Customs were levied on produce brought into the town. There were wooden sentry box stations on the roads where they crossed the City Royalty boundary. These stations were located at:-

Holburn Street near to Justice Mill

Alford place at Victoria Street

Gilcomston Steps and Gilcomston Brae

George Street on the site of the Meat Market.

Mounthooly at  West North Street,

King Street at Nelson Street,

Wellington Road  near the Bridge.

The tax on a boll meal was 3d, oats 2d, a peck of berries or any less quantity 1d, a stone of butter 1d, cheese ?d, a back birn of candle fir ?d, a horse load in creels ?d, a cart load 1d four dozen of eggs ?d, etc.
When the Petty Customs were abolished, the City Corporation had to make up the loss of income by a corresponding increase of the taxes levied on rental, and the amount of the compensation is still shown annually in the accounts of the Burgh.
