Koopalings are a clan of seven siblings that help Bowser in the Super Mario series. They act as leaders of the Koopa Troop, originally considered his children although they are not.
Iggy Koopa
“I am pretty clever, aren’t I? And a good dancer, too!”
Known as Hop Koopa in the cartoons, Iggy depicted as a crazed, mechanical genius. His two main outstanding physical characteristics are his glasses and green hair, which was originally pink, light blue and yellow. In later appearance, he is shown to be the thinnest of the Koopalings. Iggy is named after Iggy Pop, a famous punk rock singer and leader of the band The Stooges.
Roy Koopa
“Dad would want a pointless act of violence in his name.”
Known as Bully Koopa in the cartoons, Roy is more brawn than brains, preferring brute force over thinking things through. Despite this gruff, tough-guy demeanor, Roy originally wore a pink shell and his upper face is pink, a likely reference to ‘real men wear pink.’ He now wears a purple shell to give him a more distinct appearance from his siblings. Roy also wears hot pink sunglasses similar to his namesake, the rock and roll musician Roy Orbison.
Lemmy Koopa
“Welcome to Lemmy’s Magical Circus, Mario! Would you like to have somd fun with these magical balls? See if you can balance yourself on top of them like I can. Ha ha ha!”
Known as Hip Koopa in the cartoons, Lemmy is the smallest of the group. He is often associated with childish traits due to his stature and personality. He is well recognized for his multicolored Mohawk and crossed-eyes, and the rubber ball he balances atop in most appearances. His special abilities also deal with bouncy balls. Lemmy is named after Lemmy Kilmister, the founder of the rock band Motorhead.
Ludwig von Koopa
“Quite an exciting game isn’t it? I’m glad to know that we have such powerful enemies helping us out. We have more guys helping us besides these… but don’t tell Mario.”
Known as Kooky von Koopa in the cartoons, Ludwig is the eldest of the Koopalings. Not much is known about him other than that is he highly intelligent and quite arrogant. He was named after Ludwig van Beethoven.
Morton Koopa, Jr
“It’s curtains for you creeps! You’re history! You’ve had it! You’re done for! It’s all over! We win! Time’s up! Your clock is cleaned! The sun has set! The fat lady has sun! The cheese has molded! The Super Mario Brothers are no more!”
Known as Big Mouth Koopa in the cartoons, Morton stands out because of his primarily darker skin and white head. Morton is named after famed talk show host and singer-songwriter Morton Downey, Jr. This is the reason for the ‘Jr’ at the end of his name, which was a point of confusion when he was first introduced.
Wendy O Koopa
“Hey, how ‘bout a kiss, Luigi-kins? No kiss? Then no brother!”
Known as Kootie Pie Koopa in the cartoons, Wendy is the only girl of the group. She was named after famous musician Wendy O. William’s, lead singer of the punk band the Plasmatics.
Larry Koopa
“I am the emperor of eavesdropping!”
Known as Cheatsy Koopa in the cartoons, Larry is the youngest of the seven. He has blue hair much like Ludwig, but in a different style. In the official Prima guide for Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3, he was referred to as Bowser’s favorite Koopaling. While many sources claim he was named after American talk show host Larry King, like all the other siblings he was named after a musician instead. Larry Mullen, Jr, the drummer for the rock band U2.
