Mario: The Superstar
Mario is the main character and protagonist of the long-running and highly successful Super Mario game series. He was created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and also serves as the main mascot of Nintendo. He made his first appearance in the game Donkey Kong, released in 1981. Known as Jumpman at the time, in Donkey Kong he is a carpenter whose mission is to rescue his girlfriend Pauline from the clutches of the game’s namesake who takes her to a construction site. With the one button of the game, the player can make Mario jump over obstacles. However, jumping can only be used to jump over obstacles, not to destroy them, as is a prominent feature in later games.
Since Super Mario Bros his trademark abilities have been his jumping and stomping powers, with which he defeats most of his enemies, and his ability to change size and gain powers with a plethora of items, such as his Super Mushroom and Fire Flower. His distinctive look is due to technology restrictions in the mid-1980s. With a limited number of pixels and colors, the programmers could not animate Mario’s movements without making his arms ‘disappear’ if his shirt was a solid color, so Mario got overalls. They did not have the space to give him a mouth, as a result he has a mustache. They could not animate hair so they used a cap to bypass this problem. When Mario was first conceived he looked more or less as he does today, a 26-year-old man although he was originally imagined as middle-aged. He ‘stands’ five feet and one inch tall (SO AS TALL AS MY MOM! :D). The most notable change Mario has received (stylistic variations in different games aside) over the years is his change in stature, he is shown to be much stubbier in his earlier appearances compared to now. His arms and legs have grown over the years, giving him a slimmer look.
