Le cabine telefoniche si diffusero in tutti i paesi industrializzati a partire dagli anni dieci del XX secolo. A partire dagli anni settanta i telefoni pubblici furono gradualmente sostituiti in tutto il mondo dai chioschi aperti dotati di telefono, per garantire un accesso più facile ai portatori di handicap e per scoraggiare, con la relativa mancanza di privacy, chiamate troppo lunghe in aree dove le cabine sono sottoposte a un regime di altissima fruizione, come aeroporti, stazioni ferroviarie, o luoghi di grande interesse turistico.

Soprattutto negli aeroporti, è possibile trovare alcune dotazioni speciali installate all'interno delle cabine, come una presa di rete RJ-45 per connettere un computer portatile a Internet, un telefono dotato di telefax o tastiera per inviare SMS, o un dispositivo per persone affette da sordità. La gran parte delle cabine telefoniche in tutto il mondo sono dotate del logo della Compagnia telefonica cui appartiene la struttura.

Dato il crescente utilizzo di telefonia cellulare, VoIP, e Internet, il traffico sulla rete di telefonia pubblica nel 2007 è praticamente dimezzato, avvicinandosi sempre più allo zero.

In 1889, William Gray is credited with inventing the payphone in the United States, and George A, Long was its developer.[5] The first telephone booth in London, England was probably installed near the Staple Inn in High Holborn in May 1903. It was operated and located by the Grand Central Railway. However, some sources[who?] claim that there was a telephone box called "Fernsprechkiosk" in Berlin in 1881. In the UK, the creation of a national network of telephone boxes commenced in 1920 starting with the K1 which was made of concrete.

Mit dem Aufkommen der Telefonie war es notwendig „öffentliche Fernsprecher“ in Form von Telefonzellen aufzustellen, um die begrenzte Leitungszahl für einen größeren Personenkreis zu erschließen. Die weltweit erste öffentliche Telefonzelle wurde am 28. Januar 1878 in New Haven (Connecticut, USA) aufgestellt.

Mit dem Ausbau des verbesserten Netzes von Privatanschlüssen und der seit den 1990er Jahren wachsenden Zahl an Mobiltelefonen ist die Bedeutung der Telefonzellen gesunken. Um die Einrichtungen leichter zu unterhalten, sind sie meist nur noch mit Telefon- oder Geldkarten, kaum als Münzautomaten eingerichtet.

Weil immer weniger Leute die Apparate nutzen, verschwinden die Telefonzellen nach und nach.
