Clearfield County is full of old and historic locations, buildings and remnants of by gone eras.  Come and cache Clearfield County to learn about its rich history through ghost towns, abandoned cemeteries, Civil War uprising and its rich Native American presence.

This cache is placed by permission on the grounds of the Coalport Museum.  The town’s name of “Coalport” actually came from a lumbering raft used to move coal down Clearfield Creek which passes through the center of town traveling through to Clearfield and eventually on to Williamsport via the Susquehanna River.  During “King Coal’s” heyday, there were close to five operating deep mines in the area.  Still visible in the area are spoil piles of by gone mines.  One can even be seen directly behind the Coal Museum.  Coalport, founded in 1883, was one of the very rare communities which had a large working mine and tipple right in the middle of town.  Coalport’s downtown has the honor of being named to the National Register of Historic Places with 53 original buildings still in place.  Stop in and browse the artifacts donated by former coal miners or their families who wish to have their memories preserved.  Hours are Tues & Weds 10 am-4 pm, Thurs 12 pm,-8 pm, Fri. 9 am-12 pm and Sunday 1 pm-4 pm.
