FOSCORO SCHOOL
Township of Clay Banks
It is noted that the first schoolhouse in the Town of Clay Banks was located at Foscoro.
Foscoro School was closed in the later 1800’s and new schools were built inland.
Foscoro children enrolled at the new Lakeview School.
The 1889 Door County plat book does not indicate a school at Foscoro, just a Post Office.
Foscoro Village and vicinity
Located about seven miles north of Algoma.
Foscoro was a “lumber town” situated at the mouth of Stoney Creek, near the
intersection of County U and Kennedy Road.
The village had a sawmill, telegraph station, post office, school, dancehall, hotel, and several stores.
Stoney Creek was deemed to facilitate widespread logging operations, a huge sawmill was
built across the stream, and a 1,000 foot pier was constructed out into the lake.
In the 1880s, tugs frequently operated from this dock to assist vessels wishing to
enter the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal.
Today nothing remains of this settlement or its pier.
