Ella però rifiutò l'amore divino e cominciò a fuggire via lontano; Apollo la inseguì ma poco prima di raggiungerla la fanciulla supplicò i genitori, il dio fluviale Ladone e la madre, la naiade Creusa di salvarla. Gli Dèi ascoltarono la preghiera ed ecco che, in un attimo, la giovinetta si trasformò in una pianta.
