Geocache Description:

The 6th in a series of B&O Railroad history caches.

THIS LOCATION IS FENCED AWAY FROM RAILROAD TRACKS AND IS NOT ACCESIBLE FROM THEM. ALSO, NO NEED TO GO IN ANY GATE. Sometimes this can be real MUGGLEHOOD! You can walk under the subway on the sidewalk, climb the steps then proceed back to the new site or drive which may be advisable. By 1917, the mainline of the B&O Railroad was so busy, citizens, horses, and the new automobile were having nearly an impossible time crossing the tracks at the north end of downtown Martinsburg.  Train traffic was heavy and it became risky to cross the tracks before another train would come by and disrupt life all over again.  A set of blueprints was drawn up to plan for an underpass.  For some unknown reason, this underpass is locally known as a subway rather than overpass or underpass.  It took into the 1920’s for the underpass to be completed but it was worth the wait as it immediately freed up traffic entering or leaving town.
