Geocache Description:

A new flock of birds has been released on the Porthills. All realtively straightforward to find, but some navigational/ routefinding skills will be handy. And watch out for Mountainbikes! Due to forests in the area cord's could be +/- 10m approx, so clues are pretty specific. Please leave hidden!

Under a few pinecones when placed. Watch for downhill mountainbikes! Theres a fairly well defined track, but it is up a hill and not marked so make sure you are in tramping/ navigation mode! For this one you may wish to park at the top, unless you are out getting more caches lower down as well. GZ for this one is down a wee side track where bikers go, look for a view of Lake Ellesmere in the distance and you will be close.

The takahē, Notornis, or South Island takahē (Porphyrio hochstetteri) is a flightless bird indigenous to New Zealand and belonging to the rail family. It was thought to be extinct after the last four known specimens were taken in 1898. However, after a carefully planned search effort the bird was rediscovered by Geoffrey Orbell near Lake Te Anau in the Murchison Mountains, South Island, on 20 November 1948. The specific scientific name commemorates the Austrian geologist Ferdinand von Hochstetter.
