Placed near the entrance to the Swinford museum
cache placed with permission from the trustees of the museum
The Swinford museum was founded in 1931 by George Swinford and sir Stafford Cripps. The lock up was used mainly for drunks from the old pub that was opposite, it is said that the wives would use a teapot to give the prisoners a drink by putting the spout between the bars. look carefully can you see George Swinford still locked inside? you are in the middle of a typical Cotswold village, the walls floors and roofs are all made from stone from the village quarries. A short walk up the lane takes you to the open air swimming pool, village centre and shop( now a blue plaque building) and the bowling green all given to the village by Sir Stafford Cripps. the village is well worth a walk around. if you are lucky enough to call when the museum is open the staff would be happy to give you any help
