Valimised toimusid lehel www.treeoftheyear.org, sealt pärineb ka info võistluse kohta: Võistlus Euroopa aasta puu sai alguse 2011. aastal. See kasvas välja populaarsest Aasta puu võistlusest, mida Tšehhi Vabariigis on mitmeid aastaid korraldanud Czech Environmental Partnership Foundation (Tšehhi Keskkonna Partnerluse sihtasutus). Euroopa finaali pääsevad riiklike voorude võitjad. Euroopa aasta puu mõte on juhtida tähelepanu huvitavatele vanadele puudele kui olulisele looduslikule ja kultuurilisele rikkusele, mida me peaksime hindama ja kaitsma. Erinevalt teistest võistlustest ei ole Euroopa aasta puu puhul oluline ilu, suurus ega vanus, vaid lugu ja seotus inimestega. Me otsime puid, millest on saanud laiema kogukonna lahutamatu osa.
[ENG] The European Tree of the Year contest originated in 2011. It was inspired by the popular Tree of the Year contest, which has been organised in the Czech Republic by the Czech Environmental Partnership Foundation for many years. The European round is a finale consisting of the winners of the national rounds. The purpose of the European Tree of the Year is to highlight the significance of old trees in the natural and cultural heritage that deserves our care and protection. Unlike other contests, the European Tree of the Year doesn't focus on beauty, size or age but rather on the tree's story and its connection to people. We are looking for trees that have become a part of the wider community.
