Sharks have existed for over 350 million years. They evolved more than 100 million years before the dinosaurs did. Modern forms of sharks only evolved during the Jurassic period, about 150 million years ago.

Extinct sharks include the strange-looking Stethacanthus, the ancient fresh-water Orthacanthus with a long spine growing from the back of its skull and, of course, the famous Megalodon. Megalodon lived between 5 and 1.6 million years ago, grew to 40 feet (12 m) and had teeth almost three times larger than those of the great white shark.
