ITA - La prima pietra del Teatro Alighieri fu posata nel settembre del 1840, quando al restauro del vecchio teatro Comunicativo si preferì la costruzione di un'opera del tutto nuova in un'area che, seppur centralissima, era rimasta fino ad allora ai margini della vita cittadina e perciò soggetta a degrado: la cosiddetta Piazzetta degli Svizzeri (oggi piazza Garibaldi).
La Deputazione decise di affidare la costruzione del teatro ai fratelli di origine veneziana Tommaso e Giambattista Meduna, rispettivamente ingegnere e architetto civile, che avevano partecipato al secondo restauro del Teatro La Fenice.
Durante l'inaugurazione avvenuta la sera del 15 maggio 1852, il nuovo teatro venne acclamato come uno dei migliori e meglio attrezzati d'Italia.
ENG - The first stone of Dante Alighieri Theatre was laid in September 1840, when the city decided to build a new structure rather than restoring the old “Comunicativo” theatre. The new building was then erected in a marginal, decaying, though central area of Ravenna: the so-called Piazzetta degli Svizzeri (now Piazza Garibaldi).
The construction of the theatre was entrusted by the Deputation to the Venetian brothers Tommaso and Giambattista Meduna (respectively engineer and architect), previously involved in the second restoration of the Fenice Theatre in Venice.
During the inauguration night on 15th May 1852, the new theatre Alighieri was recognized as one of the best equipped theatres in Italy.
