Geocache Description:

This is a traditional cache at the site of a ruined fortified manor house dating from the Plantation, located just off the modern day main road from Derry/Londonderry to Belfast. There is parking right beside the cache. The cache itself is not located inside the boundary of the ruins. Thousands of cars pass this spot every day but few are lucky enough to actually stop.

Brackfield Bawn was built on land granted to the Skinners Company of London after the Flight of the Earls in 1607 and features on a survey from 1622. It is in the style of a fortified manor house which were built at that time as part of the conditions of the land grant. It is almost square and has two flanking towers at the north and south corners which would have provided cover along all four walls. Gun loops can still be seen in the walls and the remains of the flanking towers. Excavation discovered artefacts from the 17th century but also from long before. Flint flakes, fragments of bone and an urn are among items some of which date back to the Bronze Age.

Just across the road lies Lower Cumber Presbyterian Church which still has a very active congegation and was built in the gothic style with stepped butresses. It has six pointed arched windows with double lancets. It is an impressive building in its own right and dominates the ground behind the bawn.

The cache is a small micro, camouflaged and not inside either the confines of the bawn or the Church. Be gentle with the outer camouflage or it may break. Please replace all of the cache exactly as found to maintain its concealment.
