Geocache Description:

The [SL] series is a trail of geocaches following the abandoned Maldon - Shelbourne railway. These caches are centred around the hobby of Railway Archeology, which involves tracing the remains of abandoned railway lines. I recommend beginning the series at Maldon. For a full history of the line see the geocache page for GC5MWN5 [SL] - Shelbourne Station or GC6X3P9 [SL] - Laanecoorie Junction.

This geocache is located near the point where the railway crossed Maldon - Shelbourne road. On the Maldon side of the road crossing is a large gap in the embankment. This was the site of one of the timber bridges which was destroyed in the bushfire of 1969, resulting in the line's closure.

The bridge site is on private property but can be observed from the roadside. The remains of the timber uprights can be seen as well as stone and timber retaining walls for the embankment. The stone retaining walls are rather unusual and are the only ones I've discovered along the former railway.

The following photos are of an enthusiast special crossing the Maldon - Shelbourne railway crossing. They are from the following website, which has an excellent collection of old railway photos: http://www.brownfam.com.au/trainpics.htm

For those interested, there is also a video on youtube showing an a steam train on the Maldon and Shelbourne railway lines, the clip at the 3:32 mark shows the train crossing the timber bridge here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BukhD6hNluU

You are looking for a 2L sistema container. Remember to watch out for snakes and other creepy crawlies. Most importantly, have fun!
