Geocache Description:

Local folk lore goes like this: an early pioneer called Norbett was looking for a prime location to build a life for himself and his newly arrived wife, Nellie.

Scouting about the local area, Norbett came across a nice looking area, and being disposed to favouring sites on the tops of hills with a view, Norbett walked up the hill a bit, and found a spot that he thought was ideal.

Norbett set about putting together construction supplies to build a modest dwelling for himself and Nellie, and loaded up two pack horses. A short while into the journey, one of the pack horses became lame. Norbett had to make a tough call and took some of the supplies off the lame horse and split them between himself and the able horse. Nellie, who was struggling to keep her parasoul intact in the strong southerly and remain an appropriate lady-like decorum, was unable to assist with carrying any of the construction supplies.

The single pack horse struggled on, but couldn't cope with the additional load and the steepness of the terrain, and eventually gave up, agonisingly close to the top of the hill.

Norbett suggested Nellie assist with transporting some of the supplies to the top of the hill, which drew the response "Not on your Nellie, Norbett".

Norbett set up a makeshift camp and shelter with some of the available native timber, and Norbett and Nellie spent a very cold night on the side of the hill, with only sparse supplies to keep each other warm.

In the morning, Norbett took Nellie to the top of the hill to show her the magnicifent view. Impressed by the view, but not by the prospect of living there permanently, Nellie persuaded Norbett to be more reasonable and choose a different location for their home, and they returned to the bottom of the hill and settled in the new formed town of Upper Hutt.

The makeshift shelter is still visible to this day, just below the cache location.

Norbett and Nellie went on to live a happy life in Upper Hutt, and had two sons.

The cache is a camo'd 400ml screw top container with a log book only.

Norbett and Nellie, with their two sons taken around 1900.
