The 80 acres of Major General Philip Schuyler’s estate included the Georgian mansion that remains today, orchards, formal gardens and a working farm. It was called “The Pastures” because of the rich pastureland near the river that was used in the 17th century to pasture Beverwyck’s, and later Albany’s, cattle and sheep. This property was a showcase of grand 18th century living and could be clearly seen as travelers on the river approached Albany. The Schuylers also had a home in Saratoga, today’s Schuylerville. The ten thousand plus acres there were used for lumber, wheat and flax exports—supporting the lifestyle of the family here in Albany.
