Geocache Description:

Series around the wonderful Lancelot Clark Storth (LCS) Nature Reserve, looked after by Cumbria Wildlife Trust. Please read the info, follow the route, be gentle searching, and respect this great location. Also enjoy the views, rocks and nature! The suggested route is about 3 miles.

The Cumbria Wildlife Trust website has plenty of info about what you can see on a visit to LCS. The caches will take you around the Reserve: see map pic. You will see some marvellous glacial erratics: large boulders dropped by passing glaciers, and some non-limestone rocks here & there. There are extensive views across South Lakes, Morecambe Bay, and into Lancashire: please try and visit on a clear day!

The Reserve has a mosaic of habitats, home to a rich diversity of plants, birds and animals.  Orchids, some very rare, occur along with specialised plants on the limestone pavement. The management of the reserve is helped by a small herd of cattle, which you may meet on your visit.  Please keep dogs under control.

In case the wildlife isn't quite enough excitement, Freya has put together some info from the Arthurian legends, inspired by the Lancelot part of the reserve name.  A strange limestone feature at the bottom of the reserve is known as Lancelot as it has the (vague!) appearance of a knight on horseback (or possibly a rhino!).  Have a look and see what you think!

After the murder of King Uther Pendragon the land of Britain was in turmoil as rival lords and kings fought each other for power, and the rule of law was absent. In this dark time there appeared a stone with a sword embedded in it and a inscription declaring that whosoever pulled the sword from the stone was the rightful ruler of Britain. Many attempted to pull the sword from the stone but none succeeded until a young boy called Arthur tried.
Arthur had been raised by a knight called Sir Ector but was in fact the son of Uther Pendragon. Arthur was crowned king of Britain and with Merlin to advise him brought peace and justice to the land, the stone was left to it's own devices and over time the inscription has worn away but you can still see how a piece of it broke off when Arthur withdrew the sword!

Directions: To reach the sword stone: from the suggested parking, cross the fields to the gate into the wood. Follow through to the reserve entrance with the map & info board. Head diagonally left over to the wall corner and follow the wall up the gentle hillside. Keep going until you see a gate in the wall. Now head away from the wall on the path across a lovely grass and boulder strewn 'meadow'.  The views become extensive as you head towards the cache.  Alternatively, if you spot a red post, you can head to the cache before reaching the gate. See map pic.
