Andrew Flinn Dickson, Veteran of the Civil War

Pastor, Chaplain, Veteran, Professor

A Presbyterian Minister, educated at Lane Seminary in Cincinnati, he served as the pastor of Presbyterian churches in Ashville, Charleston and Orangeburg Court House; all in South Carolina.

At the outbreak of the war, Dickson resigned his pastorate and became Chaplain for the 25th South Carolina Infantry Regiment and served at that post through the entire war. Although not wounded during the war, Dickson contracted “camp fever” which “seriously affected” his health for some time.

After the war he returned to Orangeburg Court House, and then endured several challenges including the famine of 1866, the death of his wife and the loss of his home to a fire. He departed South Carolina taking a pastoral assignment in New Orleans then moved back to South Carolina to Wilmington and then Chester.

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, the governing institution for the denomination, called him to Tuscaloosa. His childhood friend, Charles Stillman, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa and the founder of Stillman College, influenced the General Assembly to have Dickson serve as the first professor for the institute which had as its mission the training of African American men for the ministry at Tuscaloosa.
