"Veritiera e spaventosa cronaca dell'improvvisa distruzione di Piuro, borgo ben noto della Val Bregaglia, nelle Comuni Tre Leghe.
Una improvvisa frana, precipitata dal fianco della montagna, in un batter d'occhio ha sorpreso l'intero borgo, lo ha annientato, sommerso, sconvolto, distrutto.” (cronaca del 1618).
Il 4 settembre 1618 una gigantesca frana di tre milioni di metri cubi staccatasi dal monte Conto seppellì per sempre Piuro, ricco e fiorente borgo posizionato sulla strada per il Septimer e il Maloja.
Pochissime persone sopravvissero.
Furono subito intrapresi degli scavi per cercare di recuperare e restituire gli oggetti ritrovati ai legittimi proprietari. Nel corso del settecento e ottocento altri scavi furono intrapresi, alla ricerca di oggetti di valore e delle campane. Solo nella seconda metà del '900 si tennero delle campagne di scavo di carattere scientifico, le più importanti furono quella del 1963-66 (waypoint 3) e del 1988.
I ruderi di Belfort sono invece preesistenti rispetto alla frana che non riuscì a distruggerli. Si ipotizza che la costruzione fosse un palazzo di una delle famiglie più facoltose di Piuro.

"Truthful and frightening news of the sudden destruction of Piuro, a village well known in Bergell, in the municipalities of the Three Leagues.
A sudden landslide, precipitated by the side of the mountain, in the blink of an eye has surprised the entire village, annihilated him, overwhelmed, shocked, destroyed." (Chronicle of 1618).
On September 4, 1618 a huge landslide of three million cubic meters, which detached from the mount Conto buried forever Piuro, rich and thriving village located on the road to the Septimer and Maloja.

The ruins of Belfort have existed before the landslide that could not destroy them. It is assumed that the building was a palace of one of the wealthiest families of Piuro.
