This is decided by votes by te officiating umpires after each game.

The Medal has been awarded every year since 1924 with the exception of an intermission from 1942 to 1945 due to World War 2.

The 1951 Brownlow Medal was won by Bernie Smith from the Geelong [cats] Football Team.

He had 23 votes.
