Steiglitz is a small town in Victoria in the Brisbane Ranges. In the early 1850's gold was found near the town, and as a consequence it grew on land belonging to pastoralists from the Von Steiglitz family.
Following the decline of the Australian gold rushes in the late 1870's, the population of the town declined. The last gold mine in the town closed in 1941.
Near the bridge there is a cairn that was built to commemorate the location of the first official discovery of reef gold in 1855. The discovery was made by Davis, Hooley and Butcher while travelling to Ballarat. The trio camped at Sutherlands Creek and discovered reef gold during this trip. The cairn features stones on the front face of the monument that came from the two homesteads in the area at that time, the Durdiwarrah and Moranghurk.
This cache will bring you to a old bridge, that has survived since the gold rush era. You are looking for a medium sized container camouflaged to suit its surroundings.
