Geocache Description:

A cache placed for the birthday of our grandson who often searches for caches with us; the cache is quite near Hornby Castle as he lives near there, hence the name.

Hornby Castle is a private residence not open to the public but is a grade I listed fortified manor on the edge of Wensleydale. Originally 14th century, it was remodelled in the 15th, 18th and 20th centuries. At the end of the 14th century Hornby castle belonged to the St Quintin family, until heiress Margaret Quintin married John Conyers (died 1422).

The castle was largely rebuilt in the fifteenth century by William, 1st Baron Conyers, but kept the 14th century St. Quintins tower (demolished in 1927) named after the previous owners. It is believed that during the English Civil War it was taken by Parliamentary forces but an order to slight the castle was not carried out. It was largely rebuilt in the 1760s by John Carr of York, who was responsible for the surviving south range.

In 1930 the estate was broken up and most of the house demolished. A 16th century main doorway is preserved in the Burrell Collection, Glasgow. The remaining property, originally the south range, was bought in 1936 by Major-General Walter E Clutterbuck and passed down to Roger Clutterbuck and his wife who restored the parkland to grass. Deer can often be seen travelling from the cache past Hornby and towards Hack forth.

Cache was replaced on 25 Feb 2023 and is now a camouflaged plastic cylinder. Sadly it is no longer large enough for TBs or anything other than the smallest trackable or swappable items. The cache name has been chaged removing the words TB Hotel. There is a very small change to the co-ordinates noted in the log.
